The great red spot

The great red spot can be seen on almost every photograph of Jupiter. It is the largest and longest lived storm in the solar system. To be more precise, it is anti-cyclonic whirlwind storm that rises several km above the clound cover. It's size is enormous: The diameter of the great red spot is twice that of Earth. This super storm was discovered at least 300 years ago and since then it has been drawn and later photographed over and over again.
